Verra VM0042 — Improved Agricultural Land Management

VM0042 (Improved Agricultural Land Management) is Verra's methodology for crediting greenhouse-gas benefits — including soil organic carbon — from practice changes such as reduced tillage, cover cropping, and nutrient management. As of July 2026 the current version is v2.2, and it supports three quantification routes: measure-and-model, measure-and-remeasure, and default IPCC emission factors.

As of July 2026, VM0042 v2.2 is the current version. A major revision was in consultation around February–March 2026, accompanied by a new Soil Sampling and Analysis Handbook and alignment with the VCS Program v5.

The three quantification routes

VM0042 lets projects quantify soil carbon change three ways, trading cost against accuracy: measure-and-model, measure-and-remeasure, and default IPCC emission factors.

Measure-and-model

Measure SOC at intervals and use a calibrated process model (RothC, CENTURY or DNDC) to estimate stock change between and beyond sampling events. Balances cost with accuracy for larger or heterogeneous areas.

Best for: Scalable projects with good management data

Measure-and-remeasure

Directly measure SOC stocks at the start and re-measure on a defined cycle, quantifying change empirically. Highest measurement burden but the most direct evidence of change.

Best for: Sites where dense, repeated sampling is practical

Default IPCC emission factors

Apply default IPCC stock-change factors for defined practice and climate combinations. Lowest cost and accuracy; typically the most conservative crediting.

Best for: Screening or contexts lacking site-specific data
