What VM0042 credits
VM0042 credits the greenhouse-gas benefit of improved agricultural land management — practices like reduced or no-till, cover cropping, residue retention, and smarter nutrient management. Soil organic carbon gains are the headline, but the methodology also accounts for changes in nitrous oxide and methane. The 2026 revision: what's changing

The three quantification routes
The heart of VM0042 is how you turn practice change into a defensible tonnage. There are three routes, and choosing well is a design decision with real cost and revenue consequences:
- Measure-and-model — calibrate RothC, CENTURY or DNDC to measured samples and project change.
- Measure-and-remeasure — directly measure and re-measure stocks over time.
- Default IPCC emission factors — apply generic factors; lowest cost, most conservative.
